Nick Kevern is the founding editor of Inside History Magazine and author of The Noose of Samuel Burrows which will be released by Pen & Sword Books on 30th September 2025.
He has lived in Chester for over 37 years and has a deep fascination with the city and its rich history. During his career, he has taught history to pupils in the surrounding area before leaving the profession to become a journalist. Since then, he has given numerous historical talks for the City of Chester, including an in-depth study of the Chester Workhouse told through the lives of its residents and management.
It was while researching a further talk about crime and punishment in Chester that he stumbled upon Samuel Burrows, Chester's executioner between 1809-1835. Despite living in the city for so long, he had never heard about Burrows and decided to dig further into his life and those who made their way to his infamous gallows. What followed led to him writing his debut book.
Since then, so much more has happened. A recent talk entitled "The Indecent Proposal of Edith Morrey," based on one of the chapters within the book, has been commissioned to be made into a documentary, which will be available on Amazon Prime Video towards the end of 2025.
Nick has also been working on audio tours of Chester based on the life of Samuel Burrows and has also been working with Weetwood Ales to produce an English Pale Ale called Burrows Noose, which will be available from 30th September 2025.
Nick Kevern is also a member of The Crime Writer's Association
