The Noose of Samuel Burrows Released 30th September 2025
The discovery of George Morrey’s body at his own home left those around the village of Hankelow in a state of shock in 1812. With money missing from the home and the brutality of his murder, many believed that he was the victim of a burglary gone wrong as he confronted the perpetrators.
Desperately, the villagers wanted to know the truth. Summoning Faithful Thomas, the Coroner of Chester, they hoped that the truth could be uncovered.
The Indecent Proposal of Edith Morrey takes us back to the gruesome events of 1812 and Faithful Thomas’s Inquiry at the White Lion Pub in Hankelow leading to the eventual trial at Chester Castle.
The trial caused a media frenzy that quickly captured the public’s imagination as John Lomas and Edith Morrey faced not only the court of Robert Dallas but also the court of public opinion.
This talk is part of the Chester Heritage Festival 2025.
Well, the event may be over but the journey continues. The event sold out, with some people even waiting in the bar area of the Picturehouse just in case there were any spare tickets. I want to thank everyone who came along and I hope you enjoyed the talk.
Based on the success of the talk and the clear demand, Heritage Chester is funding and producing an on-location documentary about this incredible story.
The documentary is scheduled to be released in October 2025 to coincide with the release of The Noose of Samuel Burrows. Stay tuned for more updates
